Dixie Evans, 'the Marilyn Monroe of Burlesque,' Exotic World, Helendale, Ca 2000 ©Mary Ann Lynch. Evans stands facing the camera, with her left arm wrapped around the actual red sequined dress from the hit movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Jane Russell and Marilyn are pictured in a framed photograph on the wall next to the right of Evans, wearing their identical red dresses in a scene (or publicity shot) from the film. Beneath that photograph is a framed photograph of Dixie Evans when she was much younger, during her heyday playing Marilyn in burlesque. The Dixie who stands looking squarely into the camera in 2001 wears bright red lipstick, a flowing white dress, and pearls around her neck. In 2001, at the time of this photograph, Evans was 75, the same age Marilyn would have been had she not died in 1962. Evans founded the Museum of Burlesque and Exotic World and holds annual Burlesque Contests where women from all over come to compete in the arid region of Helendale, off Route 66. The universal take on Dixie is that she is still one sexy dame, and proud of it. Yes, she did meet Marilyn, and yes Marilyn knew of her act.

Artist William Wegman leading press on a tour of his show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, talks about the techniques used to create the effects on the portrait of Man Ray he points to. In the portrait flour seems to be falling on the grey dog that frequents his photographs. Man Ray was the first dog he photographed and since then he has worked with a number of others who are happy posing for him. 2005 ©Mary Ann Lynch

Frank Dominick, chef at Principessa Elena Society, Saratoga Springs NY, proudly faces the camera as he poses with a cooking whisk in his hand midst the neatly organized kitchen where he turns out an array of traditional Italian foods. Saratoga Springs, like a number of upstate small towns with immigrant populations, had a Little Italy as well as a Dublin in the 19th and 20th century. The Society, and Frank, are part of that long proud tradition, and the building that houses the Society is the surviving heartbeat of what was once a thriving Italian neighborhood. In his bright red shirt and green apron, covering him neck to knee, surrounded by his cooking utensils and supplies, he is one proud man, ready to serve. 2006
